Assemblyman Kelvin Atkinson
Clark County
District # 17
Government Management Analyst
Assemblyman
Atkinson was first elected in 2002. During the last legislative session, he served as the Chair of the Transportation
Committee, Vice-Chair of the Commerce and Labor Committee and served on
the Government Affairs Committee. During the interim between legislative
session, Assemblyman Atkinson will be chairing an important committee that will
look at ways Nevada
can diversify our economy by becoming a transportation hub for the nation.
Assemblyman
Atkinson represents Assembly District 17 in northeastern Clark County.
The district includes parts of the City of North Las Vegas
and unincorporated sections of Clark
County.
Assemblyman
Atkinson decided to run for office seven years ago to improve the educational
opportunities for his daughter and all other children of Nevada, and he decided that the only way to
do so was to "get involved.” Assemblyman Atkinson became a part of the
process, believing that the Assembly was the best place for him to bring change
and stay involved.
A
little more about Assemblyman Atkinson:
Assemblyman
Atkinson was born in Chicago,
Illinois, and is the second of
three children.
At
the age of ten, he visited his fraternal grandparents who had moved from Chicago to Los
Angeles and he found that he loved the city so much
that he asked his parents’ permission to remain there with his grandparents.
Two years later, they also relocated to Los
Angeles.
In
1990, Assemblyman Atkinson’s grandparents decided to move to Las Vegas. Assemblyman Atkinson soon followed
and enrolled in UNLV, where he later graduated with a Political Science Degree.
In
1996, Mr. Atkinson received the greatest blessing of his life when his daughter
Haley was born. Haley, who attends middle school in North Las Vegas, is the light of Assemblyman
Atkinson’s life and is the number-one reason he decided to run for the State
Assembly.
