District # 42

Nuclear Physicist

Assemblyman Mortenson was first elected in 1996. He served as the Chair of the Constitutional Amendments Committee and was the Vice-Chair of the Elections, Procedures, and Ethics Committee.  In addition, Assemblyman Mortenson served on the Taxation Committee; the Judiciary Committee and the Corrections, Parole and Probation Committee.

Assemblyman Mortenson represents Assembly District 42 located in unincorporated Clark County—in Spring Valley.

Because of term limits, Assemblyman Mortenson will be leaving the Assembly at the end of this term. His commitment and expertise on our state constitution and protecting our natural resources will be sorely missed.

A little more about Assemblyman Mortenson:

Assemblyman Mortenson was born in 1930 in our nation’s capital. Mortenson attended the University of Maryland, Catholic University, American University, University of Virginia and received degrees from RoanokeCollege and Duke University.  He began his career as a nuclear physicist working at the Savannah River Laboratory in South Carolina ( perfecting methods of plutonium and tritium production).  Later he joined the Babcock Wilcox--Atomic Energy Division, designing the nuclear propulsion plant for the NS Savannah--Nuclear Merchant Ship.  He subsequently relocated to Las Vegas to became a staff member and section leader with Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, working on the Rover Project, which proposed to take men to the planet Mars.  The program was canceled eight years later and Mortenson decided to remain in Las Vegas, establishing several successful businesses including Cygnus Scientific--a consulting firm--which Mortenson "moth-balled" after his election to the Nevada State Legislature.

Assemblyman Mortenson is the father of three adult children and grandfather of twelve. He has been happily married to his wife, Helen since 1957.  In his spare time, he enjoys astronomy, photography, optics, electronics, videography, sailing, scuba diving, and writing.
