Democrats and Republican Find Common Ground, Reach Budget Agreement

June 1, 2011

CARSON CITY— Today, Senate and Assembly leadership, and Governor Sandoval completed bipartisan negotiations on Nevada’s budget.  Legislative leaders released the following statements regarding the budget agreement.

“Nevadans sent us here to find a solution—to work together across party lines to reach a compromise and we have succeeded, in the process protecting the most essential funding for our schools, community colleges and universities, and services for our most vulnerable,” Speaker John Oceguera said.  “We still face enormous challenges as a state, and we must continue to work together on long-term solutions—a real restructuring of our economy and our revenue structure to move our state forward.”

“Common sense has prevailed in Carson City:  we have agreed on a balanced budget that responsibly funds our schools, which was the primary goal of this session,” said Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford. “Education is the lifeblood of any economy.  If we want to diversify and get Nevadans back to work, we need an educated workforce. This budget maintains our commitment to education,  and we have taken a big step towards making Nevada competitive again.”
